Pico Mountain

Pico mountain (in Portuguese: Montanha do Pico) is found on Pico island in the Azores archipelago. It reaches an altitude of 2.351 meters or 7.713 feet above sea level, making it the highest peak of Portugal after Torre (1.993m / 6.539 ft). Pico can be typified as a stratovolcano but has not erupted since 1720. The crater on top has a diameter of 500m (1.640 ft) and is 30m (98 ft) deep. Within the crater stands a volcanic cone which the Portuguese gave the endearing name Piquinho or 'little Pico'.

The video below shows the beautiful view we had when flying out of Pico with SATA on our way to Ponta Delgada, São Miguel (Azores).

Wikipedia contains some good information if you are interested in more details about Pico's history and geology.

  2. Thanks you Thomas. We booked the ticket directly on the website of Sata and did not use an interjovem card. If I remember correctly paid €85 from Ponta Delgada to Pico. Have so much fun!

  3. Great website, I will be climbing the mountain in 2 weeks. I'm trying to travel as lightly as possible (Ryanair restrictions) and was wondering if I'll be allowed up in (robust) sports trainers or are they strict about having proper hiking boots?

    1. I cannot be 100% sure, but I cannot imagine they will make a fuss about shoes. Then again, your best bet is to check with them directly. Have fun climbing, share pictures with us on our Facebook page!

  4. Nice website for the Pico. I will climb it in 1 week. Do you know where to get the permit/authorization to go to the top? do we have to obtain it directly at the visitor Center or in advance ?

    1. We definitely know that other people have camped up there before, but I don't have any specific information around it. I would recommend you make sure you have a lot of warm clothes and equipment to make sure your tent is secure since it can be very windy and cold up there. Have fun!

  6. bonjour,
